i have a pretty big home but only 1/2 is carpeted. home depot prices are extremely high compared to buying directly from los angeles, dalton GA or a local wharehouse. if you want the best deal. buy the carpet from one of the three i listed than do as i did. got chummy with the guy in the carpet section at home depot who gave me the install teams company phone # they use. i called them direct. charged me 2.00 sq yard to install where as home depot would of charged $5.oo ( u see they make money on installation too). they did an exallent job. i paid in cash, i now have thier cell number and 2 of my friends have done the same thing.
conclusion: if home depot ordered carpet and installed(free they say to you) my job would have set me back $12,000.00.
***instead i got the work done, 1 day after my carpet arrived( i needed a day to pick up the padding - wholesale ). it cost me $3600.00 and yes that included 2 flights of stairs and alot of extra carpet. i ordered extra.
Source(s): Cecilia' not cheap. i have the best of everything including carpet but i pay the lowest because i'm Frugal. Frugal people always have the BEST QUALITY at the lowest prices. i did my homework, be smart and use it and get the best. Home depot installers are the bomb. don't forget to offer cold drinks, breaks (they won't take one - time is cash in pocket for them). give them a nice tip. - 6 years ago

Home Depot subcontract out jobs just as Lowes and all the rest. So it depends on how good the sub is that they give the job to.....I would check outside the store with other carpet layers and compare installation price. In your case I would request a dollar amount per step. Also explain how you want the stair wrapped and go over it with them. Stairs can be bid on in many different ways.

Ask around, someone is bound to know someone who will do a good job. My trust in Home Depot came to a screaming halt with a bad kitchen floor job and the fingers were pointing in every direction but theirs. For such a small job I'm sure someone could do it with excellent carpet and underlay for less than $200 and do it that week. Home Depot usually has a pretty long list. Like the other guy said, they hire sub contractors, it could be his first job.

I had them do my stairs too and living room - the carpet quality we picked was AWESOME and they did a great reasonable job (money wise) I would totally suggest to everyone carpeting a room tho to use double padding (like the old padding plus new is fine) It will make a WORLD of difference in the comfort of the carpet and can actually make lower quality carpet much much better. Your feet will love you for it! I don't think you could do that on the stairs tho

It all depends on the actual guy that does the carpet laying, not Home Depot.

it depends on the installer with carpet, but with home depot they are big enough to stand behind the installation and you cant beat the price

Home depot does not actually do the work. They subcontract to contractors near you. I had no problems and a great result
