that is a good question...i really think it is mind over matter...it depends on how well you can cope with the pain...it is different for all types of people...

I think it depends on what kinds of pain you have had in the past and what you think is the worst pain. Also some of us have good coping skills. Just an example, my mother hurt her back, she screamed it was the worst pain of her life for days until she got severe food poisoning, then her back didn't hurt at all, she only felt the headache and stomach pain. You can only feel 1 sensation at a time that's why sometimes mind over matter works or if somehthing hurts, people will sqeeze someones hand to help them forget the original pain. I have had alot of pain in my life, from jaw surgery to cancer surgery, to tonsil surgery, and I personally think people who live in pain all the time that are used to it have a higher tolerance for most pains. The people won't don't live with pain all the time who are not used to it have a lesser tolerance.

There can be loads of factors. even skin and hair colour can be one. fairer people are supposed to have a lower threshold!!!

Women are supposed to have a higher threshold as they have babies, hope that helps.

    could be mind over matter..

could be a fetish and get off on pain..

could be the distance of the nerve endings from the outer edge of the body parts.

I don't think it's a "mutation", like the guy above said. Some people are just able to tolerate it better.
