Whats the best digital camera with interchanging lenses to buy?
I would like to buy a new digital camera at a reasonable price that could be used professionally as well as for recreation. Preferably something within reason financially

I second what zargonmaximus said. You can´t go wrong with the Nikon D50 and the 18-55mm kit lens. If your budget is higher, say between $500 and $1000, I´d still go with the D50 and add a second lens (like the 70-210mm) and a few extras like a tripod and a nice camera bag. If your budget is higher still, you can look at the next model up by either Nikon or Canon.
smgray99 ´s comments are worthless...
* His claim that 35mm film is equal to 24 megapixels is not true UNLESS your talking about high quality black and white film and $1000 lenses. For color photography, the D50 with just 6 megapixels is every bit as good as an old film camera, and it will blow film cameras out of the water in low light situations.
* When he says Hasselbrad, he means the brand Hasselblad. A Hasselblad is a bulky professional camera used for mainly for studio photography. It is neither affordable, nor the kind of gear that you´d want to haul along on a vacation. (In my 20 years of photography, I´ve met ony one such nut.)
* His claim that more and more film cameras will be converted to digital is irrelevant and also wishfull thinking. To date, the only camera brand to offer digital backs for film SLRs is Leica. For them is was a prestige project. No one else is following because it doesn´t make business sense.

There are two that come to mind that are affordable, as far as digital SLR cameras.
The first one is the Nikon D50, which can be had for around $500 with a lens if ordered online. The Nikkor 18-55mm that it comes with will be a good all around lens for until you buy more specific lenses if you need them. It probably is the best digital SLR for at the price point.
The other one is Pentax *ist DL or *ist DS, again around $500 online. It also comes with the 18-55mm lens that will overall suit your needs. It is a great camera for the money, but personally, I think the Nikon D50 edges it out in features and performance.
Both digital SLR camera I listed are able to use any SLR lens designed for Nikon or Pentax respectively.

The best camera is almost any SLR (not digital) with interchangeable lenses. 35mm film is equivelant to about 24 megapixils. A high quality medium format for professional use would be a Hasselbrad - runs about $1000.00. That also uses film. There is another one on the market that converts to digital but it runs about $3400.00. Give it some time, you will see more and more SLRs converted to digital, some of which will use existing lenses that will be interchangeable.
