Remove feedback when playing music from laptop on stereo system?

Whenever I plug my laptop into my stereo to play MP3 files, I get a low feedback hum from the power source. I can unplug the laptop to stop the hum, but then the laptop dies after a few hours.

I've tried magnetic shielding on the power cable and the audio cable, but neither seems to work. Has anyone a reliable method to get rid of this feedback?
