What do you do when you tell somebody how to do something correctly, but they are always doing it wrong?

I am a superviser for a company and we have a number of people that always screw the same things over and over again. What is their problem?

Update:

For clarification, we do show them with 2 weeks of training, then more training on the floor. It's just 2 or 3, but man, they can't seem to get it right! It isn't brain surgery either! It is a call center, talking on the phone, who can't get that right?

Do you have SOPs? Maybe they need to have clarification on how to perform the action, a checklist on how to perform the action, or more in depth training? Even with all of this, people will still make human errors, it is our nature. If it is the same individual doing it over and over again, then there may be something wrong with the individual. If it is a group of individuals making the errors over and over again, there is likely something wrong with the system (training, SOP, etc).

When delegating tasks with so called "screw ups", I learned from a very wixe boss of days gone by that if you take 15 or 20 minutes to work side by side with them, not only will they have hands on understanding of what needs to be done, but they will have a sorking speed to compare themselves to, as many people work like they are paid by the hour instead of getting an hours worth of work out of them.

Draw them a picture as u explain the task. Some people need a clear "visual" to understand. Explain things at each individuals "level" of intelligence, not just your own. Then, after you have explained it all, don't just let them say, "OK"...ask them to REPEAT what you just said to see if they are even paying attention! Believe me, I used to supervise INMATE crews for 8.5 years...good luck.

If its a number of people, it sounds like a problem above their level, it needs to made simplified or 'dumby proofed'. Depending on what it is, it could be resentment for supervisors, or just lack of concern. Make it beneficial for them to do it the right way.

    Hey Boss,,,

Start acting like a boss. A boss is supposed to know how to do a job.. SHOW the person how to do the job.. Do not tell them. If you show them, they will remember. If you tell them, they might not understand what you are saying. A supervisor's job is to supervise. Start doing your job.
