it means "in example" I. E.: the previous sentence.
wikipedia says:

If it is from Internet, the meaning is Internet Explorer, a "browser".
It depends on the topic or the language it comes from.
If it's from Latin, for example...
IN EXTREMIS: that means "at the last moment",(almost as dying, or so)

Here in Indian Country, Oklahoma "IE" stands for Indian Exercise...cuz' when you get so full after eating all that fry bread and corn stew you feel like your gonna pop, and the only energy you have is to go lay down so your skin won't stretch anymore, cuz' it hurts...? That's IE.....aayyy!!

If you mean as in this example:
I read the book (i.e. _Romeo and Juliet_).
It stands for Latin "id est" (literally "it is"). It can be used instead of "that is". But a lot of people confuse it with:
I read a lot of books (e.g. _Romeo and Juliet_).
That stands for "exempli gratia" (also Latin) and means "for example". Very few people get the two right all of the time.
