    Gofio

Prior to the arrival of European settlers in the fourteenth century, the native inhabitants, known as guanches, lived on a staple diet known as gofio. Gofio is made by grinding down toasted cereals which is then kneaded with water. It can be eaten either hot or cold, and is still used today as the basis for many local dishes. Gofio is used in soups, in savory dishes like gofio with tomato and for deserts such as gofio with honey and almonds. The ever changing currents in the coastal waters ensure a varied and bountiful supply of fresh fish. During the winter months the tuna migrate to the warm currents of the Canary Islands. Sea bass, swordfish, octopus are found as well as exotic species like parrot fish, alfonsino and the ferocious looking moray. Limpets, a mollusc found clinging to rocks, is a local delicacy often served with mojo. Pejines, small fish dried in the sun, and then grilled, is a popular tapa. Most fish is cooked pan fried (a la plancha) and served

Gofio is a flour made from roasted sweetcorn and other grains (e.g wheat, barley or oat) . Gofio was first eaten by the Guanches, the original inhabitants of the Canary Islands, as the main staple of their diet. Gofio is still an important ingredient in Canary Islander cooking, and Canary Islander emigrants have spread its use to the Caribbean and all of Latin America. Gofio can be added to soups, stews, desserts, ice cream, sauces, and more.

    The Gofio

Very popular in the Canary Islands, is basically a cereal that is finely ground and then toasted. There are many types of Gofio: wheat, a mixture of wheat and barley, wheat and maize etc. Gofio can be served with milk as a breakfast meal or alternatively it can be mixed with canary soup and eaten as a main meal or starter. The original settlers in the Canary Islands, The Guanches, used Gofio as a major part of their diet.

You do have the gist of the matter in sight. It is not just China though and China is not the problem. The problem is the companies that come from our own countries. They go to other countries where labour is cheap and build their factories there taking the work away from the country in which they established themselves. They then charge a higher price for their goods and thus make a much larger profit. Some of them even use child labour, in fact most of them do, just to line the pockets of the execs or owners and the shareholders. That the quality of the products are usually of a lower standard doesn't count either. The only thing that counts for these companies and our politicians is the increased profit they make. Think of all this when you vote for any one of our politicians. These people talk about trade agreements and aid which brings wealth to our own country. The politicians make the agreements we the electorate don't. Ask yourself then who actually profits or gains from all this wealth? The answer certainly isn't the jobless or those on benefits. Also ask yourself who in this country is not now or ever has been experiencing the recession/depression. It certainly isn't the people who are actually paying for the bailout forced upon us by these incompetent failures known as politicians now is it? Personally I just call it fraud and theft. It is how the present system works. Lies and broken promises always at the forefront of the general elections. Fact!

God knows! But it's worth trying in your biggest local supermarket - they like to sell 'foreign' foods - or in your nearest imported foods store that stocks foods from in and around Africa. It could be difficult though, because most foreign food stores in the UK seem to sell Asian / Oriental food only...
