i continue to receive lots of spam mail in my mailbox. How can I prevent more spam from coming to my mailbox?

Turn on spam control, and set your filters. Also, this is one people seriously underestimate, but it works. When sharing your email addy, type it like this:
living_in_a_bell_jar (at) yahoo (dot) com
There are programs called "spiders" that search for the @ symbol on webpages, so typing it this way can save you the trouble of people who use "spiders".
Also, you can try:
living_in_a_bell_jar@NOSPAMyahoo.com
Just say "take out NOSPAM" after typing the email. "Spiders" will identify the address as being at the URL NOSPAMyahoo.com, which, of course, doesn't exist, so when they send you spam, it'll actually bounce right back to them in the form of the dreaded MAILER DAEMON!!! Hehe, revenge . . .

click on all the spam mails and mark them as spam and turn on spam control .

get a new email address preferably alphanumeric (letters and numbers) (gmail, yahoo). turn on spam control
DONT GIVE OUT YOUR NEW EMAIL ADDRESS EXCEPT TO FAMILY, FRIENDS, and BUSINESS CONTACTS.
use your old email for internet registration forms password verification and give it out freely to people in chat rooms check it from time to time and try to stay up on deleting the junk.
