why in britain is the lake district called the lake district ? when their only one lake there?

windermere is a mere ... ulverston is a water ..only one has the word lake on it on a map?

    There are 14 lakes and tarns in the Lake District, Bassenthwaite lake is the only titled lake there, the others are meres or waters.i hope address below helps, if you find it difficult to get on site with whole address try leaving out the /index etc
