You need to try a different format of disk. Most dvd-players that come out these days support multiple formats so it doesn't matter what format DVDR you use, +R or -R. THere are however some companies who still make dvd players that play only +R or only -R.
From research i done for my clients it was found that DVD-R has a better chance of working in any DVD PLAYER 90 -95% chance. DVD+R 85%-90%. That however wont help you. Check what format of disk you are using and change to the other format i.e. if you are using a DVD-R switch to DVD+R or vice versa. If niether format works first clean the lens and if it still doesn't read after that buy another dvd player. it might be worth it to change media as well as sometimes it cold just be that a certain companies disk is incompatible with the your player.
DVD Disks by VERBATIM have given me the best results.
Some DVD players do not support the reading of DVD+RW or DVD-RW rewritable disks. So try the write once equivalents first and see how that goes.
Also remember to tell set sonic to DVD-VIDEO if you can. i am not familiar with it's features but you should generally tell your burning software you are doing a DVD-VIDEO (unless it is a specialized app that only does DVD-VIDEO, but that logical). Some players will read disks fine that don't have the correct structure information, but some wont.
EDIT: your computer uses a software based DVD player. your DVD-Writer/or rom can read both +R/W and -R/W dvd's because they have been made to do so. They can also ignore structure problems sometimes.

Chances are very good that your DVD player only reads disks with DVD (.vob) files on them. Since the files were .wmv (a Microsoft proprietary format) you will have to use software to convert the video files to .vob format. Its called "transcoding" and it is not as simple as changing the file type from .wmv to .mp4. There are some DVD players that will read .mp3 music disks, video CD's (VCD's, another option for short videos) and .divx files, but I doubt you will find a basic home player that will read .wmv files.

What kind of movies are you trying to burn. Most will not play on your home dvd unless you have a program to read the encrypted part when you're burning. And it's illegal. Unfortunately.

Is your DVD player R+ or R-...what are the discs you are using to record on? It could be the difference . To my understanding R+ is the more common player if you are using R- that may be the problem.

Try a different DVD disc. I had problems with Memorex and now I just use the Staples brand
