would you change the tv station in a hotel lobby if you're only going to be there for 10-15 minutes?

i'm the night auditor/desk clerk in a hotel. there is a tv in the lobby area adjacent to the front desk. the front desk person has the remote control. a train crew that "goes on duty" in the lobby at midnight has this jerk who keeps changing the tv station when i'm watching something on tv. he's only here for 10-15 minutes before they get in the van and leave and if i miss that much of my program i may as well not bother watching because i've missed what happened at the beginning and have no idea what is going on, i watch the dead zone or the 4400 on usa at midnight. he never askes if he can change the channel, he just does it and it irritates me because i feel that he has a tv in his room and can watch what he wants in there. he never asks for permission to change and he gets mad when i change it back. am i wrong to feel this way? my boss has never said i can't watch what i want, he just requests it be suitable in case kids come into the lobby.

You have to consider the fact that you are working. It is great that your boss allows you to watch TV while you are working - but going to work just to watch television should not be why you are there.

As far as this person changing the channel, have you ever asked him politely not to change the channel because you are watching a program?

If this person is truly a jerk and pays no attention to you, then you might consider getting your own portable TV so that if this person comes along, you can turn on your own personal TV and watch your program.

There is no sense in getting into a big argument over this because you could lose your job - and if not lose your job, you could lose your TV privilges all together.

Better to try to compromise than to make a big fuss and stink over this situation.

    Good Luck!

Well he is a coustomer and you are being paid not to watch tv but to make him happy. So if you say something to him and he goes to your boss and says you made him an unhappy coustomer then guess what.

HERE is what you need to do. If the guy likes beer when he gets back have a case cold and give it to him. Tell him that you know he works hard and likes beer. Then tell him that you dont drink beer to get you thru the day because you tv shows are like your beer and are the only thing that gets you thru the night. Then tell him to enjoy. When he comes in the next night look realy interested in the tv. If he eyes it, ask how he enjoyed the beer.

Take the batteries out of the remote control and plead innocence! He's likely to mention something, and then you can say, 'well do you mind if I watch this, I've been watching it for the last half hour?'. Might just do the trick!
