Without a doubt (and I have stayed there numerous times) - the Danieli !!! I have attached the link below - please look at their photos. The location is excellent - the service is impeccable, and the rooms are luxurious - but be sure to ask for one facing the water! It is quite pricey, but if you're only going to do it once, then it's worth it if you can afford it.

As for what to do, here is my suggestion: Definitely see the usually sites (St. Mark's Cathedral, the Palace, the Grand Canal), but the best thing to do is just start in the morning and walk - walk - walk. Most of the "streets" are not named, so following directions to anywhere is difficult. You will find on many corners a sign high up on the side of a building with arrows pointing in the directino of the big landmarks, so you won't be able to get completely lost. But some of the best restaurants, shops, and just beautiful things to see/do are on some of the smaller "streets" that are off the beaten path. Remember - it's surrounded by water, so you can't go TOO far! You can always hop on a water taxi and go elsewhere, too - and DO go to Murano and see how the glass is made!

Have fun - wish I were going !!!

Venice (Venezia) actually wants number introduction, see ways to get there with hotelbye . That city has been a fabled destination for centuries. Only the title Venice is sufficient to conjure up a host of photographs, actually for those who have not yet collection foot in Italy. From gondoliers in striped tops to the Rialto and the Bridge of Sighs, criminal balls, golden barges, courtesans in gondolas and crumbling palaces facing roads made of water Venice is an amazing city. Once the only real link over the Grand Canal, Rialto Bridge scars the location of the island's first settlement, called Rivus Altus and is currently among the plenty of place that Venice has to offer.

I've stayed at the Locanda Arco Antico. Lovely place. There are many properties at Venere.com. Excellent site.

What to do, well, the Doge's Palace is wonderful as is St Marks. If you like art as I do there's a great collection at the Accademia. If you take a trip by water bus (vaporetto) you can get to the island of Murano which is famous for the manufacture of glass. There's cafe Florian in St Marks which is very expensive but enjoyable. They have musicians that play in the afternoon. (They charge a cover of 5.50 euros each). There are great markets at the Rialto and shops everywhere. If you decide on a gondola ride just beware. Maker very sure of the price before you agree and barter a little.

    Have a great time.

We stayed at Holiday Inn Venice...even though its an American hotel is was a great thing for us because it was a big room (not like european hotels) it had a nice restaurant, free breakfast, great bar, it was inexpensive, allowed pets which was an issue for us and best of all it had a shuttle to take us into the city and pick us up and take us back to the hotel. Its kinda difficult to get around in Venice if you dont know what you are doing so it was great.
