    The phalanges aren't the fingers, they are the bones in your fingers.

    There are twenty seven bones in your hand: eight carpals (the wrist) five metacarpals, five proximal phalanges, four medial phalanges (there's no medial in your thumb), and five distal phalanges.

    The fingers are simply known as digits, from the latin 'digitorum'. I don't know the exact translation but it's to do with the fact you have ten of them.
