At one point men paid for everything because they were the only ones allowed by society to even have jobs (how would a woman have paid for anything if she didn't have any money?). They did have to prove that they could provide for the woman, but the woman's father also had to pay for the wedding (or even longer ago, offer a dowry) to kind of make up for that. Now, women are able to have jobs and careers. There is still a barrier or a gap, but it is shrinking.

In my opinion, the one who asked for the date should pay (and women shouldn't be afraid to ask), or if the couple has been dating for some time, they should compromise somehow so they can have a mutual agreement as to who should pay and how often. I'll admit that my boyfriend paid for nearly every date our first two years of dating, but the tables have turned and now I have paid for most of our dates for almost two years now.

Because it is a mark of a man to be able to provide for a woman. This shows her during courtship that he is capable and thoughtful of her needs. She will need the man to be a good provider, because at some point, after pregnancy, she will want financial stability to raise a baby. Yes it all stems from that. Basic human programing.
