You may be a victum of software conterfiting? Windows is not genuine.?

This message pops up on my friend's parent's computer and has a little star on the bottom of the screen that stays there.

It says that the windows is not genuine and I know that they bought the computer from an online company. They don't have the receipt anymore as the computer is 7 years old and has been upgraded.

How to get the message thing off the computer?

Update:

To ~Pi My friend's parents said they had another friend's kid take it to HIS friend who worked in a computer shop and he did a bunch of upgrades for them to make the computer faster etc. What should they do now... the person who worked in the shop is no longer there....

someone has used their serial number to register an illegal copy of windows...oh wait, xp is not 7 years old, it came out in the end of 2001... so they either 1) upgraded to xp or 2) pirated xp themselves....hmmmm, well, if they are really innocent bystanders, they should call microsoft and tell them what is going on, microsoft can work these things out pretty easily
