Progress, the availability of affordable, cheaper, and then smaller equipment. The invention of cable TV also helped. Most people couldn't see carrying around a big camera like on football sidelines. then came the small ones and there you go. Everyone had to have one. The advertising, or marketing, of the equipment also made it easier to stay home and watch movies for alot less than going to the movies. Sales and rental tapes, via catalogs, clubs, etc, made it easier and more private and easier.
