How far is Lourdes from Montpelier?
Can I visit it in a day and be back in Montpelier at night? Is it easy by train or better to rent a car?

410 kilometres by car, that's about 255 miles.

I couldn't find the exact distance, but it's at least 350 or 400 kilometres, and Lourdes is situated in a fairly high chain of mountains - travelling by car will be longer, more difficult, and more expensive than going by train.
Montpellier to Lourdes on the train takes between about 2 hours and 2 hours and 45 minutes one way, with a change in Toulouse, depending on the time you travel and your connection. The return ticket costs about 47 euros, and French trains are generally comfortable and reliable, so it's well doable :)
