When you say you are going for a liberal arts degree, why do people assume it is for art?

I am going to school to work for an US Ambassodor (hopefully working in the Middle East or South Africa) and every tells me to go out and get a real job... Like dealing with things like that arn't real... Terrorists, Immigration...

Sorry It just makes me mad that these people are so rude about me trying to help our country.... GRRRR!

You're probably getting that response from people that have never been to college and don't understand what the term "liberal arts" means.

When I was an undergrad, I was enrolled in the college for arts and sciences, which included almost all areas of the college except for Business, Library Science, Education, and Law. So, students in history, chemistry, biology, english, and other fields were all enrolled in the college for arts and sciences.

When people found out that I was enrolled in the arts and science field, but wasn't in a scientific field, they assumed, because of the "arts" word, that I was an art major. They just couldn't grasp the concept of liberal arts.

Well I went to art school and people assume you can do anything from painting to welding to furniture building to interior design to graphics. Those are all separate majors with separate requirements. People are just dumb.
