i don't give a tinker's damm- how did this phase come to be?

    Its dam. It refers to a small dam of solder that a tinker would put in a sink to hold back water while he fixed the lower parts or pipe. Then it would be broken out. It had no leftover value, and thus was worthless, as is something that "is not worth a tinker's dam."

    A tinker's damn is actually just referring to the lead solder used by a 'tinker' or sheet metal worker. When someone says they don't give a tinker's damn, they're just saying I wouldn't give a tinker's damn(piece of lead solder) to hear your opinion, or whatever, you get the picture.
