Who am I, can you identify this character?

I was an orpahned child and I grew up with my aunt who was cruel and ill-treated me. I was then sent away to a school for orphaned children where I spent most of my childhood and then became a teacher at that same school.

I became bored with this life and decided I wanted to move on and became a Governess teaching a young French girl. I later fell in love with the Master of the house where I taught and we were to be married until I discovered that he was in fact still married to an insane woman.

I left this house and became homeless for a while, I then discovered I had relatives I never knew of and lived with them.

I then returned to my old residence where I was a Governess and discovered my ex lover who I was meant to marry had been severely injured and disfigured by a fire.

We then got married.

Who am I?

10 points for the first person who can identify this character!
