What's a good laptop for a university student?

My oldest daughter heads to university this fall. We're giving her a laptop as a graduation present.

Budget is an issue, so we've been advised to buy either an Acer, or an HP Sempron 3000. (Hope I've got the product names right...)

It has to be under $1,000. And that's $1,000 Cdn~! What would you suggest?

Thanks in advance.

Update:

Desktops are out. She's playing two varsity sports, so needs to be able to do homework during team travel times, in between practices, etc.

Best Buy usually has some well-suited laptops on sale. We got a Compaq for $650, and it was fitted for wireless and has a very up-to-date processor. Toshiba, as mentioned, are also usually on sale for under $1000.

Don't buy Dell. The models start out cheap, but they hook you with the customization and the things you "must add" to make it really good for a university student. You'll end up spending well over $1000 on a Dell.

I would advise choosing a desktop computer rather than a laptop for university. I'm at university at the moment and a desktop suits me fine.

They are cheaper and often come in package deals with printers. They are also harder to steal than a laptop. The printers permanently connected so I don't have to worry about setting it up each time I have to use it. If I need to open files on the move I carry a memory stick and use one of the many computers located around the campus. I guess it depends on your daughter but I personally prefer to work on my computer in my room and therefore don't need a laptop to carry around.

Get a gateway CX200x. It is a notebook and a tablet. You have to have a tablet. It is great for taking notes on and storing notes on. Also a plain tablet pc is fine. Just get an extra keybord and mouse to go with it. A port replicator is a good addition too, so you can conect an extra monitor, priner, keybort, mouse, or speekers if you get those. A port replicator conects every thing to the computer with one cord and suplies power.

each thing from the mandatory interpreting to lecture notes would be on line. you would be predicted to form your essays on a working laptop or pc, and in all hazard to place up a minimum of one replica on line (so that is checked for plagiarism and so on.). Many universities could have computers interior the library, and committed pc rooms, yet i be responsive to from journey that at busy situations (final date week, examination time and so on.) that is almost impossible to get get right of entry to to a working laptop or pc on campus till you carry your individual. i might certainly propose getting a working laptop or pc for college - whether that is basically a small pc quite than an entire-blown computing device. you will additionally discover that each thing from activities suits and society socials to lecture theatre and pupil nights on the interior of sight club are organised on facebook or by ability of digital mail, so no longer having a working laptop or pc on your room can advise you omit out on a number of counsel, the two to your course and for further-curricular stuff. i might rather propose a computing device for first twelve months, and say it became a needed for 2nd and third twelve months, while maximum folk stay off-campus.
