Please help me! My heart is broken...I can't keep my dog which is all I have in this world.?
I moved to a new state where I do not know anyone. I adopted a puppy and named him Rip. He turned out to be Border Collie Mix with one blue eye and one brown eye. I have taken him to lots of training classes and private trainers. He is the smartest dog I have ever owned and works on hand signals. He is great at the dog park but can not deal with anyone who comes to the house or near my car. He bites and goes crazy, he is a danger and today he bit my landlord. He has to go to a new home or be put to sleep. He sleeps with me, is my only friend in the world and is my whole life. I promise I am crushed and my heart is broken. Please don't be mean to me because I am beyond dealing with anymore pain. I have no family and don't know many people. What can I do, please help.
Realize that the problem is not about finding a new place to live. The problem is that Rip is so territorial that changing residences is not going to be a solution. The situation will still exist.

Your question makes me sad i had to have a border collie put to sleep for the same thing it was only a matter of time before he might bite a child he bit my mother and had to go, its heart breaking, most border collies are a bit mad they are working dogs and really belong on a farm. Its very painfull dogs are the best friends in the world i have a big black labrador now called billy labradors are much more placid. Its so sad hope things work out for you god bless. (James)

Oh, this is a horrible situation and I realize how badly you feel and how torn you are. You did say something that was important and that's that he's a danger. My mother had a herding dog that was the same way and the problem escalated and the story didn't have a good ending. I'd recommend that you contact the trainers that you've worked with and see if they know anyone that has experience in handling this type of dog. I'd also contact vet offices and see if they know of anyone that has a ranch that would be willing to take your dog. These are working dogs and high energy and not everyone can handle them. Your situation is a sad one and you obviously want to do right by the dog all the while realizing that he can be dangerous in the wrong hands. I wish you the best of luck.

If your dog truly means that much to you then the first answer is simple. You tell your landlord that you can't give up your dog just because of a rent. You will have to find a new place to live. The other action that you should take is to see a canine behaviorist and work on the territorial aggression problem This can be done very effectively. You can start by setting up a consultation with your vet. He will be able to help to some degree and then if needed he can recommend a behavior specialist.

You can try bringing the dog to the park to find someone he likes and maybe make a new friend?
I think you may need to move if you want to kepp him though.
I know how you feel and I would move too if in your shoes.
The border collie is very smart but very loyal and protective.
It takes a great deal of work to break instinctive habbits, and the older he is the longer it is embedded.
If you have anyone who will help, a good start is to have someone in the car or house and you bring the dog in.
He will see that you are not upset over the guests.
You can not yell or scold him harshly or he will associate having company with being scolded!
He will try harder to keep stranger away so that you do not yell at him.

I couldn't ever imagine giving my baby away-what were the circumstances of him biting the landlord? Did the landlord report it and that's why he has to go to sleep? If he is as obedient as you say why is he so angry? A really good book I recommend reading is called "The Latchkey Dog". It sounds to me like you pup is trying to be the alpha and needs a reality check. This book shows you ways to change their attitudes and it also gives good ideas on why dogs behave the way they do. I have used a lot of the method suggested and turned my crazy hyper jumping biter into a calm, relaxed and social dog....it takes time and patience but you sound loving enough to provide it. Good luck to you and in your decision making.

It may be hard to find a new owner with his behavior problems. If you could find someone who has experiences with dealing with this type of behaior, then that would be a good home for him. I am sorry that you need to find him a new home, but totally understand. One thing too, is call you local Border collie rescue, and they will probably take him and work with him, on his aggression issues, and find him a home where he will fit in well. Later, you could get nother dog.

I understand the pain you are going through but I don't understand why your dog bites everyone. We have a border collie mix and she is the most lovable thing you would ever want to meet. She thinks everyone is her friend. Was your dog mistreated or did you teach him to be aggressive. It isn't a good thing to have a dog who lashes out at everyone he sees, he may really hurt someone bad one of these days.

One thing you could do, when you are around other people is muzzle him. In the meantime look for a dog behaviorist and get some help with this biting behavior. If you absolutely have to give him up, go to a no kill shelter, where at least he would have another chance.

If the landlord says the dog has got to go, and you really love this dog, then move as well. Not sure an apartment is more important than the dog!

Just move to a new house. If u luv ur dog that much, move to a new apartment that allows pets and put ur dog in a crate or cage when someone comes over so that he will not bite them. Or, u can hire somebody to keep ur dog for you at their house and u charge them. That way, Rip will still be your dog, just somebody else takes care of him.
