Can I use a cable box I bought on ebay?

I bought a Scientific Atlanta 2200 on ebay thinking I could use it at home because that's the same box I am renting from Cox Cable. When plugged in,and it boot's up, it say's on screen that "set top box is not authorized call xxx-xxxx" My cable company forces it's user's to rent, and told me that they do not allow 3rd party boxes. Is there any way to rig the box or get around this nonsense? The bottom of the box has a sticker that say's it has "RSA" security, can this be disengaged? Thanks for any help...

Update:

make no mistake ,I pay for cable , I have a subscription, I just dont want to rent the box. When I talked to the rep I said " then how come I could buy my modem for my internet service" they said "hmmm...we dont have a answer for that" it is nonsense that they "force me" to rent a box, bastards..

Cable boxes are for decodeing the digital channels, for instance, try tuneing your television to channel 179. cant do it. anything above channel 99 becomes digital. internet for example is digital on the frequency of channels 106-108 you just see snow because there is no video signals there. yes, renting a box sucks, but hey, if you dont like it, and i dont, get satellite. btw, the boxes are digital as o9ne anwser stated, they have to be activated by the central office, believe it or not they are more like a modem for high speed internet in the way they are programmed and accessed by the cable company.

Don't even try it. Theft of Cable service is a federal (and most likely state) offence. I believe the fine for theft of cable is currently 500 dollars.

Even if you wanted to rig a box, cable boxes use digital signals instead of analog, so there isn't anything at the local radio shack you can use to tamper with a box like the old days.

Obviously it's their cable company, and they set any rules they would like to set for their customers. Protecting their system -- and their customers -- is not "nonsense". Sell the box on ebay to get your money back.

i have had cable as well and and it would take a genius to get around them. unlike satellites there are actually people who can get you cards to activate your box.... for a fee.

Source(s): i have known people who have it, has had it, and who has lost it as well.
