My 11 wk old son is always sucking his hands. . and they are always cold. Is this norma?

He sucks on his hands ALL the time, even when sleeping. He also seems to be kind of fighting with something while sleeping, But once you wake him up he is fine, without fuzzing and/or turning his head from one side to another. Also, he does not like the pacifier

I am a mother of a 8 month old and it all sounds pretty normal to me. He just discovered his hands and probably they are just cold because your room is cold and his hands are either wet from his sucking or just are because our extremities usually don't get as much blood flow as the rest the of our parts. I wouldn't give him the pacifier anyway, my daughter never liked it and she never needed it. As time progresses I would try to get him to stop sucking his hand or his fingers because a 2 yr old neice of mine still sucks her thumb and it has an infected sore on it, but she will not stop sucking it.

My son is four months old and he sucks on his hands all the time. He too is like fighting with something in his sleep..its kind of alarming but when you wake him, he's fine! My son isn't big on the pacifier thing either! His hands are always cold too. This all seems pretty normal!but, If you are worried just talk to your pediatrician!

Hands are natural pacifiers, always and easily available to suck on. My daughter doesn't have cold hands but she likes keeping her feet cold. The sleeping thing is normal too (along with its affect of driving parents batty). Not only do babies move around like many adults do, but they can easily startle themselves with the movements (without even waking).

Personally I think it's good that he doesn't want a pacifier, it seems like it's hard to break them of the habit.

My son was also obsessed with his hands for a while, I think it's because he has found something new and exciting to him. He is discovering things about himself. Just make sure to keep his nails clipped so he doesn't scratch himself.

As for his hands being cold, my son's hands were always cold too. I'm pretty sure it's normal after talking to friends who have said the same thing.

I would talk to your Doctor to make yourself feel better at your next appointment. I wouldn't make an appointment specifically for this, just mention it at you son's 3 month check-up.

I think this is consider normal...my son did this also he was breast feed and never like the pacifier... but yes he suck on his right hand...and he actually slept threw the night ...As long as you know he is well fed and burp. and also you might consider to put some mittens on his hands to prevent coldness and to see if he continues to suck on his hand ...my son is now 2 years old and he never was bottle fed and went straing to a zip cup...I try the ones with the plastic tops and they were fine ....and yes make sure when he has his hands well clean...but I think it should not be a problem as kids also suck there finger.. till the age of three..

Wow. Ever end to imagine, to her, her hands are the international round her? each thing, even some thing as straight forward an mundane, to us, as hands is new and diverse to her. She is stimulating her suckle reaction, eye hand coordination, and stimulating the nerves in her hands by ability of sucking on them. To a newborn, this creates distinctive issues to imagine about. Take a deep breath and perchance attempt to get some better relax.

Im surprised that he doesn tlike th epacifier being that he has the urge to suck all of the time... there are so many different sizes shapes, and textures for the nipples on pacifiers have you tried them all...maybe you just havent found the one that he likes....

  • babys suck on their hands usually when they are hungry...but sometimes they just suck of them cause they are their hands and they can. Baby drool will make a baby's hands cold...so I don't think it's anything to worry about. As long as he is eating good and acting happy and healthy I wouldn't worry. My boy did the same thing and I'm sure his lil brother will do it too.

My 7 month old daughter sucks on her hands so much that it leaves sores. It's a natural calming affect. If you're too worried about it, offer him a teething ring or something such as that to suck on.

try diff. pacifiers. maybe he just doesn't like that one. my daughter only likes one kind of pacifier. and it's the gerber gentle flex pacifier. she won't take the nuk or the ortho ones. check it out. it might help. and ask his doc if the cold hands are normal. maybe he's anemic? probably not, cuz he gets enough iron from formula... or not, if you are breastfeeding.

and he probably just moves suddenly in his sleep cuz his movements startle him. try swaddling him or laying on his tummy.
