I just got an Evinrude 1999 6HP 4 stroke OutBoard hasn't been used in years.?
Can I just (try to) start it up or not? Runs on just gas, right? No manuals or other info.

the afore mentioned suggestions are good but one more important thing. water pump. an impeller sits off center of the "cup" it turns in, some of the vanes are always bent. over a long period of time they develop a " memory" and no longer pump nearly as well if at all. with new gas and an oil change including the foot, garden hose or water filled drum, give her a yank. when it cranks, make sure it pumping, if not, shut it down NOW. even if it does pump i would rebuild it before i took it out. tune it up while your at it.

I suggest that you perform a complete maintanance on it, before running it. Replace the oil, bottom end grease, drain any old fuel, clean and gap the plugs, and submerse the shaft in water (just set it in a garbage can with water in it) overnight to get some lubrication into the cooling impeller before starting it. Then before adding gas, crank it for about 15 seconds so that water gets pulled into the engine. If it starts, then immediately look for the water pump to be working If you don't see any water discgharging, shut it down immediately, and replace the impeller, since it probably dried out.

As mentioned by Maximus, cylinder walls will be dry. some oil in gas is good, but you can also pull the spark plug(s) and put a small amount of oil directly in the cylinder. Rotate the flywheel by hand with the plug(s) out to spread oil around.
Make sure there is lubricating oil in crankcase.
But first, not a bad idea to get some water onto the raw water impeller, because it can get dry. Put muffs on lower unit and connect to hose to get water to impeller to provide some lubrication.
good luck

good little outboard. i'd positioned the motor in water, upload some gasoline and note if it is going to start up. reckoning on the variety 3 hundred and sixty 5 days, i'd have a guide the following for it in case you pick some records

If it has not been used in years I'd put a little oil in the gas anyway, because the cylinder wall is going to be dry.
