how do i get a page number at the middle top of the page.?
I press insert then page number but the number appears at the beginning of my work

Go to insert - page numbers and it is going to ask you where you want it inserted and you can choose top of the page and centre -- it will appear at the top of the page and in the middle. You can also choose whether you want the page number to appear on the 1st page or not.

If you are using Microsoft Word click on 'view' then 'Header Footer' The using the centre button on the toolbar you can add the page number to the middle top of the page
