I want to move to Boston in the fall. What do I need to know? Where is it best to live?
I'm an artist and hospitality professional. I would like space, but would prefer affordability. I won't have a car. My move date is flexible, but looking mostly in mid sept. I need help finding a safe place to lay my head.

I live in Brookline and I love it! Every year there are artists' walks where there are open galleries in people's homes. I have never had a problem with feeling unsafe in Brookline.
Try and get a place near the T (subway) since you don't have a car. It's generally reliable and much nicer than the bus. Coolidge Corner is nice, as is Washington Square.
Find a realtor and he/she can find you a great place. It's much harder to find a place to live without one.

My sister lived in Sturbridge outside of Boston and she really liked it. It was a safe community and lots to do nearby. I'm not sure about the driving into Boston though. If you will not have a car, then this would be too far away. Good luck!

Housing in the Boston area is pretty expensive, so you should probably do a bit of research before you move. You may want to consider living in Somerville or Jamaica Plain--both are accessible by subway (the "T") into Boston.

If you are an artist, the 2 places I will recommend are:
1) South Boston
2) Jamaica Plain.
Both are artists communities. I prefer Jamaica Plain - esp along South Street. JP has more life, good restuarants and more affordable apartments than South Boston.
I JUST WANT TO ADD THAT BOTH PLACES ESP JAMAICA PLAIN ARE BOTH PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION ACCESSIBLE.

I think the best place to live in boston is on the east side of the state.

in brookline there is a lot of inexpensive but nice housing, however it is a big jewish and religious area and most stores in the area are not open fridays and sometimes weekends. harvard square is a little more expensive but in a great area.

I think you should know if you will and not that you just want to. You need to buy a Red Sox hat.
