has anyone used cadaver tissue for their gum surgery?

"Human cadaver grafts and animal tissue grafts, although approved for use by the FDA, carry warnings: They are not guaranteed 100-percent risk-free from transmitting diseases to patients. Furthermore, these grafts have never been proven more effective than autografts.

"The safest and best surgical procedures are those transplanting the patient’s own tissue (autograft). Just as people bank their own blood before a non-emergency medical surgical procedure, there is no risk of disease transmission when patients use their own tissue.

"When patients have insufficient protective gum tissue, we recommend gingival augmentation or root coverage procedures using autografts. We advise against using human cadaver or animal tissue grafts."

While autografts are good when they are practical (i.e., enough tissue can be harvested in advance), periodontists often use cadaver or bovine tissues for gum surgeries. While they do not provide all of the same benefits that using your own bone could in allowing for continued tissue growth, they are used frequently with few problems. If you're unsure about the safety, ask your dentist about any possible potential problems.

I used cadaver bone 30 years ago before there was the testing available now - I can walk today because of the surgery and because of whomever donated that bone - I don't have an answer for you, except to say, inquire as to as much as you can find out - what tests have been performed on the tissue - ask to SEE the results just to be safe. Donation is a great gift - consider it yourself!!
