How do I remove old pipes from a bath tub drain?

How do I remove old iron(?) pipes from a leaking bath tub drain? I want to replace it with the PVC (?) stuff you get at Home Depot. Any tricks for breaking the bond and wrenching these pipes apart? Or do I have to cut? The pipes that are there have probably been there for 50 years and are well rusted together.

Since you are replacing the iron pipe with PVC, cut out the old stuff. If you have a small grinder you could get a zip blade and cut the pipe, just be careful of the spark it will throw. http://www.amflexabrasives.com/shop/customer/home....

    Hope it helps.

You can rent a pipe cutter for that. It looks like a chain with a pipe wrench attached. It is used for cast iron pipe which is probably what you have.

But to do a pro job you need to take as much out until you get to a good plumbing branch where you can secure the adapter connection to convert to PVC other wise you end up with a bunch of connections and each connection you have increased the chance for a leak.

The fixture (drain and tub valve should be replaced while you are at it and the hot and cold valve.

Don't get the cheap stuff , Quality is better unless you want to do it again in a few years or so.

Don't forget plumbers putty and teflon pipe tape.

Good luck. Remember it's a dream when it works but it can be a nightmare.

I hope you have a second bathroom while this is going on.

properly you probably did mess it up. you could desire to attempt the wall at the back of the tub. some have a door there . whether it is gigantic sufficient you could artwork in there. yet you will in all hazard could desire to pass decrease than the residing house. while to procure it to coach it pulled out of the overflow pipe. if somebody can carry the backside of the drain pipe from below you could desire to unscrew it from the surprising. Then replace that with a sparkling drain and overflow pipe.....good success

It sounds like you have cast Iron.....if you are talking about the drain not the supply lines....there are 2 ways....First is to get a cast Iron cutter...looks like a chain on a stick....hard to use in close quarters...the easy way is to use a 4 puond slege hammer and keep hitting it until it breaks........hope this helps...
