I use a service, "hostexcellence" that charges as

little as $2.95 per month (if you sign up for

an extended period) for their base package

    which includes:

1 domain name (with 20 subdomains)

    5GB of storage,

    50GB/month bandwidth,

    an email account

software for ecommerce, site building, etc.

[I have no relationship with this company except

    that I'm a satisfied customer.]

It depends on your needs. You can get free hosting, but expect to have people bombarded by popups when they visit your site. If it's just a quicky thing this might be ok for you. Shared hosting can cost as low as $4 a month. A lot of services have economy plans for small sites that don't need a lot of bandwidth and disk space. The more bandwidth, disk space, email addresses and other bells and whistles you need the more it'll cost. Now when you start talking about dedicated and virtual dedicated hosts the price goes up significantly. Most people don't need this kind of hosting. It's essentially the same as renting a PC with a high speed connection that you have total adminstrative privileges on.

A couple of things you need to know though. Most hosting plans charge on a montly basis and offer you an opportunity to save a bit by pre-paying for several months in advance. Pay attention to what's being offered for each plan. Make sure you get one that with enough space to store your site and enough bandwitdh. Pay attention to how much bandwidth overages are going to cost you too.

Are you asking the price to HOST the site, or the price of hiring someone to make the web site for you?

Hosting varies. I know of one very good host that is less than $10 USD per month for their basic hosting package. Of course there are also many free hosts that are ad driven.

Web design services also vary a great deal. You could get a freelancer for $50 an hour or you could spend thousands having it designed by a graphic design firm. You would really have to shop around.
