it depends... if you know there is an older person there who might not hear the knocks.. then ring the bell, if a party is going down... knock... Real HARD. If it is late a night... go for short, small knocks, don't want to wake the house if you are creeping.
But in general.. just on a daily basis.... I usually knock, unless the house is real big and they may not be able to hear you in the back rooms

well i think it depends, but i would have to say that people will hear the door bell but with the knocking will confuse it with someone or something knocking up against a wall. You will be outside a whole lot longer with the door knowcking.

Well Apt's generally don't have doorbells so commen sense would be to knock :)

ring first then knock if you don't hear movement or a dog barking within a couple of minutes

Ring the doorbell if there is one and if it works. To not use it defeats the purpose of having it.
