Do German Shepherds get along well with cats?
I'm considering adopting a German Shepherd. I have two cats in my house already... would the dog get along with the cats, or try to eat them? lol... (FYI I know the dog wouldn't actually "eat" them, but I'm worried about any type of agression. My cats are my babies.)

It depends on the dog and the cats. Bring them together on neutral ground and see how they react to each other.

It depends on the dog and how socialized it is. Generally German Shephards are ok around cats, but tend to be very protective of their owners. If the cats show any sort of behaviour that the dog considers unacceptable or even threatening, then you might have a problem. Might. Ask a lot of questions at the shelter about the background of the dog you are considering adopting. Some shelters have "test cats" (that sounds awful, but they are well protected) to see how a dog reacts around cats.

If you get a pup it should be fine. Also some adoption agencies can tell you if they have been around cats. However your cats may find it difficult to get used to a large dog if you get an adult. I adopted a four month old German Shepherd and he was a little big but he was fine with cats. The foster parents had cat before we adopted him.

Of course they do... If you first bring them together, the cat will be afraid of the dog and the dog will want to run after a cat because that is what dogs are supposed to do.. BUT.. BUT after a period of time... and after scolding the dog for running after the cat, they will get along. I have had that situation many times and it is funny to watch them at first but after a time, the cat will curl up to sleep with the dog and pay NO attention to the dog and vice versa but it may take a few days to a week.

If you are thinking of adopting(I'm assuming from a shelter), ask the shelter to let you bring one or both of the cats in and see how they get along before you bring the dog home. Most shelters will allow this as they want a good permanent home for the animals.

He should. When you first get the dog keep him in a kennal or locked up somewhere where the cats can still see and smell him. They have to get used to not being the kings or the of the house!

it depends, if you keep them apart at first. if u do, then u might as well keep it that way, b/c i feel that since a german shepherds such a powerful serious when it needs to be dog, then if it sees the cats messing with u, it feels that u're in danger, it will attack and hurt will happen. so, have them slowly together at first then ease your way to them pplaying together, but if you're that worried abput your cats, then don't even bpther putting them in that type of situation.

If the dog has been around cats before it will be fine. But if he has never been around a cat then it could be trouble. But you never know.

They have to be socialized with cats as puppies. Also, your cat should be socialized with dogs as kittens so the fur doesn't fly, as it were. GSD are wonderful breeds, and remakably easy to train. I will never have another breed.
