Woodern tanks on roofs?

What are those woodern tank-like structures that are on many roofs in NYC? I have never seen such a thing in any other city.

    its a Gravity Tank,

back in the old days, it was impossible to get water pressure for the upper floors so water tanks were needed for buildings over 5-6 Stories tall....

They were originally used for water in the high buildings. The water pressure would not rise beyond a certain level, so they put a water tank on the roof to provide water for the building.

They are water tanks. The city is so old, as is the plumbing, that it is difficult to get good water pressure to the upper floors. The solution, water tanks on the roofs.

I love NYC... even tho I live in S.F. CA
