Rory Cochrane who played Detective Tim "Speed" Speedle in seasons 1 and 2 was a trace evidence and impressions expert; originally from Syracuse, New York, with a degree in biology from Columbia University, Speed was killed in the line of duty in the third season premiere, "Lost Son"; he had not maintained his firearm as diligently as he should have, and when it jammed during a police shoot-out, he was shot in the chest by one of the suspects. His character was written out by request; Cochrane wished to pursue a film career, and was not happy with CSI: Miami's long shooting schedule.

Because of something that happened with the characters of the original CSI. Two of them didn't show up to work because they wanted more pay and they almost got fired. Rory didn't want to end up like that.
Plus he was very unhappy with the role of Speed. He felt like it was a never ending thing.
