Hey, I went fishing today and kept catching these Gars. Anyone know the history of this Fish?

They are very ugly with big teeth. UGH!

The Gar is a type of Pike. The gars are members of the Lepisosteiformes (or Semionotiformes), an ancient order of "primitive" ray-finned fish; fossil gars are known from the Permian onwards. Fossil gars are found in both Europe and North America, indicating that in Cretaceous and Tertiary times these fish had a wider distribution than they do today. Gars are considered to be among the most primitive bony fish and are most closely related to the bowfin, another archaic fish now found only in North America. But be careful Gar flesh is edible, and sometimes available in markets, but unlike the sturgeon that they resemble, gar roe is poisonous, Roe is the fully ripe egg masses of fish and certain marine animals, such as sea urchins and shrimp.

The gars are slender primitive fishes, living links between the sharks and our common bony fishes. They are found only in streams and lakes of North America. Four living kinds are known. The alligator gar has a short broad bill armed with a double row of large teeth. The other three species, which have longer beaks and a single row of long sharp teeth, are the Long-nosed Gar, the Spotted Gar, and the Short-nosed Gar. The first of these may reach 25 pounds in weight; the other two only 5 pounds

Very prehistoric fish. Some people here in Louisiana fish for the alligator gar(get huge in saltwater).

hey, i dont know the history of those gars, but i'm sick of them cleaning my hook! last summer i was floating on a tube in the river where i live and one came up to the surface and bit me on the shoulder! i swore i would never get back in that water, but i did.

not in all hazard. often an unsightly visual attraction for a fish for my section is greater exciting in the two actual and social features =D yet, this is type of unhappy how there are in user-friendly terms 3 left....

Oh I hate those things. They look like a prehistoric monster. Glad you are getting them out of the fishing hole.
