What are the demographics of an a person that calls themselves a environmentalist?

I am in the process of writing a business plan for an item marketed toward "environmentalists." Is there any research about people they call themselves environmentalists i.e. average age, sex, economic status, race, or other buying preferences. Please provide reference on were you found this information

Update:

all the answers so far are off target. I want more numbers. What does the person who calls themselves and an environmentalist look like, age, race, sex, spending habits, etx. None of the answers so far really discuss this.

Hi, after attending several conferences, reading many books, having many conversations, and political involvement, I would have to say - identifying yourself as an environmentalist has one common factor. An early relationship with nature as a kid. Being able to commune with the vastness of nature, discovering biophilia from an early age. After that happens, people tend to gravitate to other like minded people who then share wisdom, information and inspiration. This crosses all demographics. This is what makes putting "environmentalists" in a boxed category difficult. And of course, not everyone who has an outdoorsy experience does establish a reverence for the outdoors, nature and its diversity. Children participating in scouting or religious groups are not directly encouraged to develop biophilia either. After all the possible experiences we could give children, our socialization in a hyper-capitalistic world trumps and ultimately negates the idealization of keeping our love of nature and living in harmony. Our cosmology or myth of today rewards stagnation and cynacism, rather than creation and awe. Environmentalism may indeed be the secret many people keep "in the closet". We each live a certain way and define our values, but acknowledge the vast majority of people in our present western world cannot accept our world views.

The very concept of "use" many environmentalists may find revolting. We have a problem of scale and philosophy. Our society's sacred grail of growth and progress is withering and we have begun to desire a story to define our reason to live.

Designing a new product or service, I believe, is still in the "use" paradigm. If this idea offers a permanent item, that is part of a closed cycle of use, kept of the garbage heap for a very long time, and made from reclaimed, recycled, or sustainably produced materials, environmentalists will recognize this and support your venture. Novelty is not enough.

Nearly everybody calls themselves an environmentalist. The word has no meaning.

I'm not kidding. Nixon established Earth Day. Was he an environmentalist? George Bush Sr. established the Monterey Marine Mammal Sanctuary. Is he an environmentalist? Does knowing this change your opinion of either person? The commercials for the fuel companies have been telling us for years about how they are protecting the planet. What self-respecting liberal tree-hugger would use that word to describe themselves when George Bush Jr. can tell the American People "I am the environmental president."?

There has to be a better word to describe the people you are thinking of.

If you want to find out about environmentalists, do a search on tree-hugging pagan hippie liberals.
