What does our Independance Day mean to you?
Two-hundred and thirty years ago fifty-six people risked their lives to sign a document that would bestow freedom upon a new generation. Today I honor their names. Does anyone else care, or is this just another excuse to drink?
I'm not looking for generic answers either.

If they wouldn't have risked their lives, we would still be government by a queen, and facing taxes out the wazoo. We wouldn't have the freedoms we take for granted everyday or a voice in our own government. I feel that over the years holiday's have lost their true meanings. I think people anymore think of a holiday as simply a day off of work or school; and a day to go party and have fun. People should really remember what these days are truly about. I mean, look at Christmas. It's a day that we are supposed to be celebrating the birth of Christ, and almost 9 times out of 10 you ask a child what Christmas is about, their answer is presents.
I believe people should be further educated on what each major holiday is all about. If we aren't going to be celebrating our pasts, then what is the point of even having a day off?

Every day you see on T.V. the pictures from the countries we are fighting in. There are children walking the streets and bombs going off. There are pictures of buildings blown up and women shopping in the store next door.
I could never imagine raising a family in that. Having my children or grandchildren walking the streets where just a short time ago a car bomb went off.
To me, freedom is taking my grandchildren on a walk as the sun is setting. It is going to the church of my choosing while my children attend theirs. It is being married to someone that I love and not someone who was chosen for me. It is wearing what I want when I want.
Freedom is too big for me to describe but it is very important to me. And no, I am not drinking, and never have. Another choice I get to make.

Any excuse to drink is a good excuse in my book...Today I honour stupidity though. Especially of a people who rebel over a tax on tea when said tax was barely a fraction of a percent of the amount Tea prices were coming down. I guess the other reason for the revolution was democracy, but anyone seeing W. in power knows what a mistake that was. Quite the boon for pseudo-Christian fear-mongers though.
I'm going for a coffe.
