Gross Income - Gross Expense = Net Income (Or Net Loss)

In a nutshell I've heard ppl talk about CA, NY and other places being "relative" in cost of living.

Fact is most ppl in those areas earn a wages that may be exactly the same as someone in other locations.

So affordable means, how much do you have left over after your expenses.

I know folk who live in "rural" america who can't afford to live; since they live above thier means:)

Figuring the equation above will answer your question and allow you to determine "affordability" no matter where you go

I've lived a lot of places and affordability meant making sure I had a Net Income as opposed to a Net Loss to work from.

Affordability is a relative term. Places with unusually low cost of living (such as SW MO where I live) tend to have much lower wages than more expensive metropolitan areas. If I found a job in Boston that paid double what I'm currently earning, Boston would be more "affordable" for me.

anywhere in rural america. small towns have virtually no property value. a house that would go for a million in a city, you could get for about 200,000 in a small town.
