I think the best way is to find a song that you really like and then find the guitar tab for it (just google the song name and "guitar tab"). Don't pick anything really hard, but fairly simple, like "Free Falling." And then just sit in front of a stereo and play it over and over until you can play it and then move on to another song and after a while you will be ready for Zeppelin or something that is a little more challenging. Also find a friend that can already play so you can get help if needed.

I just picked one up and started playing. Ever since I can play any song I hear and I'm great at coming up with riffs. The best way is to mess around with it until you get a feel for it. Lessons are an alternative to this, because you have someone instructing you the proper way to mess around with it. But I never took lessons.

Call a local music store and ask if they have lessons...then ask what styles they teach, if you want to learn Rock styles don't take a primarily folk or country style person, you could also get some of those tapes you see on the internet to play, they can help if you have a geneal idea of playing...Good Luck

I think some type of lessons are best in the beginning. If you're looking for online lessons, try checking out http://www.actoguitar.com/ -- the lessons are organized, have videos, and you'll get pretty fast responses to any questions you have. Offline lessons can be great too, provided you can find a good and affordable teacher in you're area.

Take guitar lessons at a local music store. Some people can teach themselves, but it doesn't work for everyone.

i learned from friends, find someone that you know and have them help you out. Be sure to learn how to read music too. don't be one of those that says they know how to play but can only play a few chords from some weak songs.
