This issue goes back to the 18th century and Cartesian times. If you were a lover of a wealthy count, or a duke, you were not given money as gifts. A genuine Cartesian female would receive gems and jewelry for repayment of her services. They were not just sexual. You had to be well educated and be able to hold a conversation with royalty. A real Cartesian female would gather enough of jewelry to comfortably retire once she lost her beauty. That is why it is said that diamonds are the girls best friend even though she may not be a girl anymore.
