Who's dumber the song writers or the song singers?? Don't either of them know grammar??

There are countless grammar 'mistakes' in songs. Most of them are made so the song will "flow". Bugs me too, but you just have to get used to it, or find songs/songwriters who have a bit more integrity. :) Let's hope people start realizing how wonderful correct grammar can be!

You are correct... songwriters take liberties with the language...

but that is because they earn no points (or dollars) from correct grammar...

Some genre's are worse than others... blues, country and gangsta rap are the most obviuos examples...

but even the classic songwriters of the Golden Era of the 1920's and 30's used to mangle the language... usually with great effect.

Listen to the GREAT lyrics of the WIzard of Oz (by lyricist Yip Harburg) in the song I've I only had a brain (heart, nerve)...

he butchered the language but it was pure genius..

"I'd unravel ev'ry riddle

For any individ'le

In trouble or in pain"

"Oh, I could tell you why

The ocean's near the shore,

I could think of things I never thunk before

And then I'd sit and think some more."

"But I could show my prowess,

Be a lion not a mowess,

If I only had the nerve"

So songwriters have always reinvented the language when necessary, and often just for fun (as in these examples)

The most obvious reason is that most people don't ponder the lyrics dance at the same time *grin*

but later when you are driving all alone on your car you will stop and ask yourself, "What the heck are they saying!?!?" but by then it is already on the radio and somebody has scored a big hit..
