How do you de-matt a Bearded Collie?

Or any long-haired dog. I really don't want to shave him if there's any way of getting the matts out.

Anybody got any de-matting strategies?

Well undoubtedly the easiest way is to shave him and then keep on brushing. However if you want to do a couple days work there is a way.tedious and time consuming only to be done for a little while at a time because the dog will get mighty tired of it.I remember well an old English that was presented to me at my grooming shop, matted to the skin all over its body. The owner refused to shave him down.It took 5 days and the patience of Job to save most of his coat. What you do is first to get a DE-matting tool at a grooming supply store.Put him in the tub and thoroughly soap and condition the area that you will be working on.Try starting with the topside, less likely to be so bad.Use the dematting tool to split the mats and a long needled stripping brush to brush out the mats that you have split. When you have accomplished this rinse thoroughly brush it out and go to work again tomorrow. Not easy huh but there is no easy way that I know of..Good Luck

  • Usually if the dog is very matted the kindest thing is to shave it and start over.

If you insist on leaving it long, be prepared for lot of work. It would probably be worth it to have a groomer show you some dematting techniques and tools, because it's hard to describe properly. Only work on a small section at a time, because it is painful for the dog.

Honestly, there have been occasions when I've taken the time to show an owner how to dematt their dog. Almost always, they are back within a few days asking me to shave it.

If you do shave, start brushing right away so that you and the dog get used to the routine before you have hair to deal with. While he is growing out you would probably be best to brush him daily, once he is in full coat you may be able to do it a little less often, depending on the coat texture

Sorry, I am a dog groomer & have tried just about everything there is to try (shampoos, conditioners, dematt treatments, matt combs) and nothing works.

Take your dog to a groomer, get him shaved. Take your dog to the groomer every month. And between visits, buy a metal dog grooming comb and comb him out everyday.

If you want a beautiful long haired dog, there is no other answer.

My cocker spaniel gets like this. I've taken him to the groomers and the only solution is to shave him. The hair does grow back so we end up doing this like 3 or 4 times a year.

sometimes you have no choice but to shave all the hair off..depends on how close the mats are on his skin..and it is painful to pull mats out when there is alot of them.. if they aren't too bad shampoo and put conditioner on (for dogs) and buy a dematting comb(pet stores) and try..its not that easy if he has alot..good luck

Nope, I have a Malte-Poo and I HAD to shave him, it was really awful, because it will just keep getting worse if you don't shave it off as soon as possible and just be careful next time.
