You need to download the Win98 drivers for your flash drive from the manufacturer. Win98 does not have built-in support for flash drives. If the drivers do not work make sure you have all Windows updates available and that you have installed the motherboard USB drivers.

The product key doesn't work because XP knows the configuration of the hardware on the computer that the original install was performed on. Another Bill Gates special! The best way is to go to Wal-Mart and get a copy of XP Home. I think it's like $89? Unless your sure that Windows 98 is working properly. After you put the new O.S. on get on the net as soon as you can and download Belarc Advisor. This program tells you a lot of information about your computer, including the product keys. You can print out the info and keep it for the future. This would have saved you some trouble this time around. The drivers for the USB ports have been corrupted or are missing. You might try unistalling the USB drivers in the "device manager", if they are there, and then rebooting. That might work.
