I hate substitute teaching! What should I do next?

If it were legal, I'd paddle nearly every b*tt in the District I work for, including some staff members!!

Become a pro Dom. Some staff members would probably pay for that paddling.

Seriously, what is your passion? Make your passion your career and all will work.

I would at least try and get hired as a full time teacher for at least two years. It takes at least 4 years to get the degree; make sure it isn't that you just hate subbing. Subbing sucks. The kids are meaner to subs; I always threaten my students with some horrible punishment when I know I am going to be gone. The truth is they will behave the way you want them to (when you have your own classroom) if you are clear about your expectations.

The reason I say two years is because the 1st is so difficult and you make so many mistakes. I made some mistakes that really blew up in my face; I had one class in which they all wanted to make my life miserable. However, I learned from the mistakes I made and now 8 years later I really like my job, but then there were times I would go home and cry, no lie. Stick in there; you may like it after all.

As for the staff, all staffs have the gossips and trouble makers. In student teaching they told us not to go into the teachers' lounge because some teachers are just so negative. Now that I am a teacher, I choose who I spend time with. Also, teachers spend most of the day in their classroom with minimal time with colleagues.

Most of the answers do not really address why this person hates subbing. It has nothing to do with finding your passion, We all can't work at something we love and pay the bills. I am a sub and it is hard. Mainly because it is a bureaucacy that has nothing to do with teaching; it is about managing .behavior. I was in a class today and the Para was begging the kids to do the work and begging the kids to stop talking and threatening the kids to take away their activity. These were 6th graders, He never followed thru with one threat. he kept talking about not having a bad day because a sub was there. I was right there in the room and was not allowed to teach, I have a master's degree and I worked hard for my education circumstances caused me to try and change careers. Adults have changed education and now it's a big business for adults, not an education for the kids. So when they end up in the workplace don't be surprised at their laziness, bad attitude and refusal to accept responsibility.

Since you are in teaching....why not just move over to corporate trainer?

I use to be a trainer for a large corportation back in my mid 20's. Had my own office, then had a meeting room where I had classes few days a week for managers, etc. Few other days I would go out into the field and do on the site training.

Same type of work, no kids to put up with, around adults all day, more pay for sure.

Is it that you hate being a sub, or you hate teaching?

I have my credential and it makes teaching WAY more enjoyable.

Subbing is HELL and I don't blame you for hating it. I did it for a year while I was in the credential program.

If you like teaching then go for the state certification, if you hate teaching.. then start looking around for a completely different profession.

One thing about teaching is that you only work 186 days a year (or so) and you get off work around 3pm... off for 2 weeks during Christmas... so on...

I would think that a 9-5 in a cubicle all freakin' year long would KILL me.

    Good luck!

Your expression implies that you hate substituting , not teaching. isn't it?

I wonder how you started the 'sub' job! You must have some idea or interest when you selected the job.

I understand your problems. But try to make YOU like it first. Then students will like you. When you make them like, your job is easy. May be there are some or more problems in classes. But still your job is, take a teacher role with an invisible mask and be yourself to walk home when your are done!

Compare to teacher, sub doesn't need to drag their work with the same students and keep tracking of their behaviors, grade etc. Just say 'hi', do your job with fun and say bye, that is it!

IF it does not work with you, say bye to the job to find the one it fits to you! ....wait...wait...

Find another job first and then say bye to this one!

    Find a real job.

No seriously, maybe if you actually taught a class then you can establish a repoire with your students. Generally a substitute teacher is harassed because the students want to know how much they can get away with.

Otherwise, what about becoming a private tutor or teacher?

It depends on your education. Do you need to get a higher degree to do what you want? Do you actually want to some day become a teacher? If so, you may have to stick it out subbing to make the necessary contacts to be able to get a job in the long run.

If you don't want to be a teacher---go some where else.

Source(s): I've been a teacher for 6 years and subbed before being hired.

I do too!I have even done gardening and mowed lawns to avoid those nasty mouths(staff included). The best though, was refinishing and restoring antiques. I say was because I moved.Find anything else, though, it's not healthy to work where you feel like kicking butt! Oh, how about a bouncer!
