This has been such a "mystery" for decades.
Somewhere around 30+ years ago, the mattress tags had simply read "do not remove under penalty of law".
It never got any clearer that the consumer (fancy word for buyer) could remove it once they purchase it. It was so the retailer (fancy word for seller) couldn't tear them off and try to sell a cheaper quality mattress at a higher mattress quality price and. The consumer would know exactly what the mattress was made of.
So the consumer (fancy word for buyer) would be scared into not removing it.

Dude, I am sooo glad that someone has brought this to light! I defy the entire Tag Police faction to stop me. I have this thing where I absolutely HATE tags of manners. I have removed the tags off of every shirt and mattress that I own, and I tell you, I have not been harrassed. F*/* them, I do not understand why they have to put tags on absolutely everything, and I cannot understand how someone could wear a shirt with a tag on it. Even the mere sight of a tag on my bed or couch mattress makes me sick to my stomach, and them I say this: I do not need your tagged oppression. I have a dream, that one day, my children will be able to wear clothes and sleep on mattresses and not be judged by the presense of a tag!

A silent alarm is sent to the FBI and an arrest warrant is immediately generated. Sorry i could no longer face up to. The tag can't be bumped off via the retailers. i think of it includes education with regard to the extensive-unfold of the mattress. the buyer who owns the mattress is loose to do what they want.

The mattress police come after you. They check every item in you house (and furniture you have donated to charity) to make sure all tags are intact.
Whatever you do, don't take the irritating tags off the neck of a T-shirt. There is a whole brigade of T-shirt police waiting to track you down.

Nothing. As long as you own the mattress.
The tag is to ensure that it meets appropriate fire safety regulations for mattresses. This has to be available at the time of sale.

If you look closely at those tags, they just say that the tags can't be removed until the mattress is sold. After that they're fair game.
But people never look closely.

Nothing, on the tag it says that it is a penalty of law if removed except the consumer. That means the store can't take it off but the consumer can.

Only the consumer can pull the tag off. If the retailer pulls it off, they could go to federal camp.
