End of support for Windows 98 and Windows Me (Any Comments)?

July 11, 2006 will bring a close to Extended Support for Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me as part of the Microsoft Lifecycle Policy. Microsoft will retire public and technical support, including security updates, by this date.

It's a good thing, for sure.

Windows 95, 98, and ME are all part of an outdated operating system design. They are becoming more and more incompatible with newer hardware and software. When you first make a software purchase, whether it be an OS or a program, part of that money is allocated for funding the support of that product. It does run out you know!

The only ones who are complaining are the ones who feel that a PC should last 10-15 years. While it can certainly last that long, it's naive to assume you will be using it for anything besides web surfing and word processing at the end of that time. There's no point for any company to support a product beyond that period of time. Those who disagree just don't want to fork over the $400 or so to upgrade their PC and OS. That's no excuse to complain.

Funny too, is that it's the elderly who are moaning. They should really be blaming their grandchildren and their peers for spreading around "script-kiddie" viruses and spam. That's the real reason why it's not worth supporting outdated OS's.

There are still a large number of win 98 machines out there. Not everyone can afford to buy a new system that is capable of running win xp. Not everyone is tech savvy enough to install and use Linux (i'm talking about grandma's, kids, etc.)

Ending security updates for win 98 will only create a more insecure computing environment for all of us.

About time. The longer they continue to support these outdated operating systems, the longer it takes them to provide timely support for computers purchased in the past five years. As the bulk of Windows users have made the change to XP (or 2000 in business environments) we should see a faster turnaround for these for both patches and/or hot fixes.

This upsets me a bit. I have windows 98 second edition. Good thing I have a friend who's a computer wis. Still upsets me though. When it becomes to outdated I'll switch to XP or what ever else they might have that's newer by then.

were given a sparkling pc with Vista living house correct type on it. a lot to my wonder, it extremely works large! i take advantage of all of it the time. I genuinely have numerous machines twin booting XP and Ubuntu and had this pc twin booting Vista and Ubuntu yet i finished up giving Ubuntu the boot off of the pc and purely operating Vista. Vista has distinct the valuable homes XP sorely lacked. XP is what drove me to start up operating Linux in the first position! i imagine Vista is a good product and that distinct the risky remark and comments are from people prejudging the OS in step with what they have heard. this isn't to assert I approve of or propose Microsofts' merchandising schemes!

They are totally outdated. The new software doesn't support older OS's so why bother...
