How would you describe the smell of durian?

I've heard about it along time but never tried it before. I found a bali restaurant that sells it and wonder how you would describe its smell.

It's mostly found in the southern most provinces in the Philippines. It's almost like sh!t but I think it's like candle with kid poo. But it''s really good. It tastes like flan.

    Fun fact:

Keep a durian under ur bed, so when a thief breaks into ur house, just throw the fruit to his/her face. OUCH!!! It's very spiky!

Before the trip back to my country (vietnam), i could not stand the strong odor of durian. And I could not even eat a little piece of it. But that was history. Now, you would not believe it, but I love it..love it.... it's something you have to learn to like it, and when you know the taste, you'll love it.

For all people who love durian, they also love the smell of it. They describe it as a strong and sweet aroma.

Durian is a fruit that people hate it or love it. There is no in between.

For me...It's one of the best fruit in the universe!

    Describe Durian

  • 1 decade ago

Once, in college, my friend brought a durian back to the dormitory from Chinatown. He opened the fruit, sealed the flesh in tuppenware and threw it in the fridge. 2 hours later, firemen came to the dorm....apparently the neighbors thought there was a gas leak.

I personally love the smell of durian and think it is so tasty. But it can be pretty offensive to other people, that's why it's illegal to take the fruit as carry-ons in planes.

ugh..! durian makes me wanna puke! I don't like the taste, and don't like the smell either. The worst thing is, I live in a country where durian is available around nov-dec, and it's being sold on the streets, well..that's pretty awful for me to cope with it smell : (

im from singapore and it is common to find durians here. durians have strong smell that can turn-off or turn-on ppl. Most SE Asia ppl should have no problem with this King of Fruit. The fruit is creamy and can be bitter-sweet.

Sewer gas. My girlfriend and I sampled a durian smoothee in Chinatown, Honolulu. We were pretty convinced there was a sewer break in the shopping center, but NO! It must be an aquired taste, because - well, yuck!

    It smells like "Death"

If you know how dead people smell, this is exactly the same aroma.

Open a corpse mouth, and take a deep whiff, You can smell the rotten meat.

It also tastes disgusting, like you are eating Death with a slight petroleum taste added.

That is how i would describe it

Well, when it is sitting, unskinned in a warm environment it kinda smells like old gym socks. I am not kidding, drove 13 hours from Vancouver Canada with 4 in the trunk, NEVER AGAIN.

They are quite good to eat though.
