What is the difference between ion ion and ion dipole attractions?

    Well, first remember that an ion has a charge because it gained or lost electrons. So, ion-ion interactions are between two atoms that actually have a charge (Example: NaCl is an ionic compound--Na+ and Cl-). Ion-dipole interactions are between an ion and a compound that has a partial charge due to the distribution of the electron density of the compound.
