Is the U.S. Congress going to hurt the internet for all people?

While most people are concentrating on the War and Bush, as well as the elections, does everyone know what congress is planning to do to the Internet? Congress wants to pass a bill that requires that music and movies are coded. (No doubt this comes from the industries to prevent illegal downloading) But let me tell you what this means. 1. All CD players, DVD Players, MP-3, Ipods, and computers will have to be changed to read this coding. That means that everyone is going to have to buy new stuff. It also means that there will be additional cost for these items as well as the movies and music to cover the cost of coding. That also means that internet prices for downloads will increase. Not just in America, but this will effect the whole world. Congress should not pass laws that are going to affect the world. So my question is, how many of you are going to let congress know that you wont support this bill, and won't vote for any of them that do come Nov.?

Update:

No Higlender you are thinking of something else. This coding is different. It will not be encoded on the cd, but in the actual movie or music.

Update 2:

Cal don't confuse All American's with the Government.

Just so everyone knows the plan is not to vote on it until the elections are over and they come back to office in the summer. Which means many of them will sit on it until they are re-elected, or even say they wont vote, but will later.

I've already contacted all of my representatives, and received a form letter from each stating that they hadn't decided how they're going to vote. I'm livid!

I live in Australia, so what right does the U.S Congress have to affect things in my country? How dare they even think to do this to the entire world! Now can you see why most people around the world dont like americans? When their actions affect not just themselves but other people and havent even bothered to inform them or let them help to decide.

Dont get me wrong, I reckon the U.S is Australia's closet ally. We both have two things in common; mostly good, friendly people and currently bad governments.

... that would become a HUGE issue in an election year...

they are afraid to vote on immigration and I think this issue could be even bigger...

I think it would motivate people that don't usually vote to vote incumbents out of office if it passes... but I don't think congress is that stupid

I did not know about this! Thank you for informing me! I will write my congressman, hell I will write to all of them.

The government has no place telling us how to run OUR internet.

They may have been responsible for inventing it, but I won't let them destroy it. At least...Not if I can help it somehow.

    Hack...hack...hack...hack... hahaha
