Pencils (as we know them) were developed in the 19thc. The core or "lead" is made from graphite. In the late 1800s the best graphite came from China. In order to mark out the pencils that had Chinese graphite, makers began to paint those pencils yellow, a color associated with imperial China. It has stuck so that today 75% of U.S. pencils are yellow, regardless of where their graphite came from. Check out this site for lots more pencil history : http://www.pencils.com/yellow.html
